The first portion of the project is listed below:
Think of your favorite musician/band/group. You are going to do some research on this person/band/group.
With your chosen musician/band/group, you are going to create a biographical essay over that person/band/group. In your essay, you will need to cover the following:
-
Who is the person/band/group
-
Dates (Birth-Death)
-
Where/when were they born
-
Where/when did they die
-
-
Where did they go to school
-
What/Who influenced the person/band/group
-
Career Information
-
What albums have they released, and dates
-
List the “Top Ten” based on your opinion
-
-
Have they won any awards?
-
-
You will need to cite, both in-text and bibliographical, any sources you use for this project.
For the second part, you will be given the task of listening to the works of your chosen musician/band/group.
Using Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, etc., you will need to find five (5) albums by your chosen musician/band/group and listen to two or three tracks from each one. Using concrete musical vocabulary, you will need to discuss their general use of the elements of music (melody, harmony, pitch, rhythm, timbre/tone color, texture, form, dynamics). Think of these questions to help guide your discussion; these are not the only questions you should answer, come up with your own:
-
How do they manipulate the elements to evoke emotions?
-
Do they use the elements in complex ways?
-
Are their melodies memorable?
-
Do they have some “go-to” things in their music when it comes to their characteristic sound?
-
Do the albums sound similar?
It would help if you also listed the albums and tracks you are referring to. I would encourage you to be very specific with timings in the tracks as well.
The more deeply you listen, the more successful you will be with the assignment.
