A Class Divided

Watch the Frontline presentation about Ms. Elliott’s first-grade classroom lesson: A Class Divided: The daring lesson at https://www.pbs.org/video/frontline-class-divided/ (PBS: Frontline). In the first 20 minutes, you will watch the original lesson provided by Ms. Elliott to her 6-year-old students. Then she interacts with these same students as adults discussing their memories of this classroom experience.

Please respond to the following questions:

a. What characteristics did Ms. Elliott indicate were ‘true’ of the superior group? Describe the characteristics of the inferior group.

b. Do those negative characteristics reflect stereotypes about minority groups today?

c. Watch the children’s body language. How did they react to being labeled? What about when they were re-labeled?

d. Select one of the now-adult class members and discuss their reaction to lessons learned during this activity.

e. Relate this type of bias to nursing care delivery. You may create a hypothetical or relate an actual work experience.
