Week 05 Quality Improvement Processes and Approaches, and Quality Tools

The purpose of this discussion board is to provide you and your nurse colleagues with an opportunity to discuss quality improvement processes and approaches, and quality tools.

Questions:

Respond to the following questions.

  1. What is the difference between a quality improvement system and a quality improvement tool? Explain.
  2. Select and compare three of quality tools. What are some of the key similarities and differences among the selected quality tools?
  3. How will you select one of the quality improvement processes and approaches, and implement one or more of the quality tools as described in last week’s presentation for your QI project?

Neo-Freudian theories

It will be important to get into the habit of first completing the readings for the week and then complete the learning activities before focusing on your graded Assignment. Learning activities are non-graded and will be aligned to content you will address in your assignment.

Unit 4 Assignment: Discuss Neo-Freudian theories and concepts of personality in relation to a scenario-based situation.

Introductory paragraph: As you learned from your readings and discussions, there are many theories used to study and explore personality development. In this assignment you will have the opportunity to apply Adlerian personality theories and concepts to a real-world situation.

This Assignment will measure your understanding of several Adlerian personality theories.

This week you will complete a 2-3-page expository paper exploring the role of Adler’s Birth Order theory, relating it to a scenario. Then you will discuss an Adlerian concept to show how it is present in the given scenario.

Scenario: A seven-year old male child has been brought to your office due to acting out in the home. The child is disobeying, having temper tantrums, and hitting his siblings. The family has recently adopted two female children who are 4 and 10 years old. Complete an essay addressing the following elements:

Summarize the scenario, focusing on the 7-year-old child.

  • Explain the child and the situation relating it to Adler’s concept of birth order.
  • Describe an Adlerian concept and discuss how it may be impacting the situation (e.g. inferiority complex, superiority complex, aggression, social interest).

Unit 1 Discussion

To prepare for this discussion, reflect on why you chose to study human services. Note how your motivations have helped you to complete your degree program thus far. This type of reflection will help you to understand the needs, obstacles, and motivations of your future clients or the staff you will supervise. Also, consider how your culture and personal diversity issues have impacted your life and the pursuit of your goals. This reflection will help you understand how you view the world and how your views and experiences may differ from those of your clients.

Additionally, this Discussion Board will allow you to create a hypothetical client and scenario. You will be building a case plan for this client over the duration of this course and exploring the challenges your client may face while working on their case plan.

Please respond to the following:

  • Describe how you faced and managed obstacles, handled failures, and celebrated successes. What strengths did you utilize during your academic journey?
    • Describe a client who is representative of the target population and setting of your intended career. Briefly describe your client’s main problem and current situation.
    • Describe your client’s culture and the global or diversity issues that impact their situation. Be sure to consider current events, both global and local, that might impact your client.

Please be sure to also read and respond to at least two classmates’ postings. Be sure your responses are substantive in nature and ask questions, provide additional information, or promote thought. Consider the following when responding to others:

    • What cultural or diversity issues do you identify in your classmate’s client, and what might the impact of those issues be on the client’s situation or on their ability to be successful in overcoming their current challenges?

    example;

    Hi Class,

Describe how you faced and managed obstacles, handle failures, and celebrated successes. What strengths did you utilize during your academic journey? During my academic journey, I can say I really struggled with managing time. Certain classes required more essays. At one point, I work full-time and part-time and going to school full-time  at the same time. I had to

learn how to manage my time to get my assignments done. I started doing my outline for my assignments during downtime at both jobs instead of hanging around or going on my phone. I did most of my discussions in advance on my off days, so I didn’t fall behind because I was tired.

Describe a client who is representative of the target population and setting of your intended career. Briefly describe your client’s primary problem and current situation. My client is Ryan, a 7-year Caucasian boy who’s absent a lot and doesn’t really speak to anyone. He stays to himself. He also has a sister that goes to the same school that’s in the same situation. His clothes are always dirty and have a strong odor, and his hair is never groomed. Recently Ryan came to school with two noticeable bruises on his arms.

There are often signs of child neglect and child abuse. Some are noticeable, and some do not neglect Poor growth or weight gain or being overweight, Poor hygiene, Lack of clothing or supplies to meet physical needs, taking food or money without permission, Hiding food for later, Poor record of school attendance, Lack of appropriate attention for medical, dental, or psychological problems or Lack of necessary follow-up care(Child abuse 2021).

W7 Group Think and Working in Groups

Class, group politics and committees, what could go wrong?  Another forum to explore some concepts, please make sure to complete both parts.

Part 1:

Have you ever went along with a bad decision and tried to figure out later why you did? Well, don’t be so hard on yourself, it is phenomena called Group Think. Our text covers it well, but attached in this forum you will find two great articles that discuss it. Please read them in preparation for this forum.

After reading the articles answer the following questions.

Group Think Article

Abilene Paradox

https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_82.htm

  1. What is the difference (in your words) between groupthink and the Abilene Paradox?
  2. Which do you think it is easier to fall into and why?
  3. If you were leading a group and saw signs of Groupthink how would you handle it?
  4. Are there any personal examples of any of these (Groupthink, Abilene Paradox etc) decision blunders that you have been a part of and realize it now?

Part 2:

This week we will be getting involved in politics! We’ll be forming committees and trying to get something done on Capitol Hill! Here we go….

  1. You have been tasked by the federal government to lead a committee to determine the actions required to reform immigration.
  2. You have to present your findings to Congress on Friday. They will expect you to answer the following questions:
    a. Who will be on your committee (not names, just positions/organizations)?
  3. . How will your committee make decisions?
    1. What challenges do you expect your committee to face (think of this as external factors – don’t focus on internal group dynamics for this part)?
    2. How will you organize the committee?
    3. Define the committee’s task (think of this as your problem statement). It should be clear and concise.
    4. Post your initial work as if you were addressing Congress (answering each of the above questions).

Remember to utilize relevant course material to guide your work (and the course concepts should be evident in your work). You can make up “facts” as needed to complete the week’s work, just make sure you answer all questions.

Some reply hints:  Ask your peer one relevant question as if you were a member of Congress. The question should challenge your peer (you are skeptical of the committee and want to make sure your peer has a solid plan). Another great statement for a peer reply: Tell your peer why their committee members are inadequate (this should be tactful and aimed at helping them).

C3, C4, and CAM plants

Slide 13 in our week 3 powerpoint discusses briefly the three different photosynthesis methods that exist in plants. The three pathways are referred to as C3, C4, and CAM. This Khan Academy module  (Links to an external site.)discusses these three pathways in more depth. In our daily lives we come across a variety of different plants and they each use one of these pathways for photorespiration — this is determined by where these plants evolved to survive. For example, CAM plants open their stomata at night because they have adapted to survive in very hot, very dry environments. An example of this is the Crassulaceae spp. pictured below.

For this discussion board your assignment is to find a plant living outside your home, take a picture of this plant and submit it to iNaturalist (Links to an external site.) and get an ID of your plant. Once you know the genus or genus and species of your plant (for example, the genus for the plant below is Cassulaceae and it is an unknown species so spp.) figure out which of the pathways the plant uses for photorespiration. Using your knowledge of the pathways discuss whether this result is surprising or, if not, why it makes sense. Here is where you would include a peer-reviewed article. (Ex: https://academic.oup.com/jxb/article/71/16/4629/5837361?login=true (Links to an external site.)) If you are having difficulties finding a peer-reviewed article please contact me or join my office hours.

Compose an original post following the guidelines laid out in the discussion board rubric. Remember to complete your original post earlier in the week so that others my contribute to a discussion of your post (part of your grading criteria). Please include a link to your iNaturalist upload.

After writing your original post, respond to 2 of your classmates’ discussion board posts on this topic. In your responses to this discussion board focus on the similarities or differences in your plants. If you are from the same geographic region are your plants similar? Why do you think that is? What if they’re different? (Hint: Think about native vs. non-native plants)

Remember that you should be including at least one citation to a peer-reviewed research article that I did not provide to you in your original post. The video that explains peer review is on our intro to class page if you would like a refresher. If you cannot figure out if a source is peer-reviewed feel free to send it to me and I will provide feedback.

You should also be proofreading your original posts and responses. I recommend going to the writing center early in the week if your posts have included a lot of writing errors up to this point. You can also use resources such as natural readers (Links to an external site.) or turn on the speak feature (Links to an external site.) in Microsoft word.

Unit 4 Padlet Assignment: Evidence-Based Practices and Practice-Based Evidence on Trauma and Crisis Intervention

Based on the required readings, select an evidence-based practice (EBP) or a practice-based evidence (PBE) for treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder or acute stress disorder in Western and non-Western research on trauma and crisis intervention. Identify and analyze at least three strengths and three limitations of the EBP or PBE of your choice.

You will create your own Padlet board and post the three strengths and three limitations you identified.

Instructions on how to create a Padlet and embed it to this discussion thread are below, it may seem lengthy but it is an easy process.

Compose First Half of Annotated Bibliography

Here we will bring together all the skills you have learned in Steps 1-5. Much of the work is already done. In Step 1, you located your sources, and in Step 5, you created Chicago Style citations in bibliographic form for them.

In this step (Step 6), we will produce half of the Annotated Bibliography. The second half will be done in Step 7. The first half of your Annotated Bibliography will contain 2 sources:

  • 1 scholarly journal article from the UMGC Library
    and
  • 1 source from the wider internet

Each source will be cited in Chicago Style bibliographic form, and each source will have its own annotation.

Each annotation will be at least 150-200 words and will include:

  • Author Background
  • Publishing Organization Background
  • Thesis
  • Evidence
  • Degree of Bias
  • Accuracy
  • Comparison to Other Sources
  • Assessment of Quality for Academic Research
See instructions for details on these items.

These skills will serve you well in future courses and as you encounter articles in the news and on social media.

In Step 7, we will:

  1. use the professor’s feedback to revise the citations and annotations for your first 2 Annotated Bibliography entries.
  2. add citations and annotations for 2 more sources
    • 1 scholarly journal article from the UMGC Library
      and
    • 1 source from the wider internet.

In total, your complete Annotated Bibliography in Step 7 will contain 4 sources.

Watch the Schoolhouse Rock video and answer the question

Watch the Schoolhouse Rock video, “Elbow Room” (link here: “Elbow Room,” Schoolhouse Rock (Links to an external site.) ). Draw on the video’s details (visual images, characters, story, music, lyrics, etc.) to answer some of the following prompt questions in a post of 100-150 words:

How does this children’s video from the 1970s tell the history of American westward expansion and settlement? Consider, for example:

• Who are the heroes/protagonists of this story? Who/what are the antagonists/impediments to settlement?

• What messages does this video present about the frontier, technology, Native Americans, and/or American colonists?

• Do any of these messages overlap with the ideas of Charles Darwin or Frederick Jackson Turner? How so?
