End-of-Term Reflective #2

Prompt: Please write a journal-like response (does not need to be a formal essay) that considers your own effort in the last unit. I have some questions to get you started if you are struggling thinking about your progress, but no need to follow the questions in this order or answer all of them:

  • How do you feel about the time you dedicated to our class over unit 2 as well as your time planning strategies throughout? Do you need to adjust any of the time-planning strategies you are using for your energy-management? Explain.
  • What was the most important learning that happened for you during this unit in terms of yourself as a reader/note-taker?
  • What was the most challenging part of this unit and what strategies or resources did you turn to to get through it?
  • What did you learn through the revisions process: what kind of feedback was helpful for your own writing growth and the revisions to your narrative?
  • How has your writing/study space worked out for you? Do you have another space you’d like to try on campus?
  • What kind of new awareness do you have about rhetoric and rhetorical analysis after this unit?
  • Have you reached out to me or any RU resources throughout this unit to seek support?
  • What do you hope to improve about your work for our next unit?
  • Is there anything you’d like me to know about this unit and your effort moving through it?

Anthropology

We have spent much of the first half of this course discussing the evolution of the human lineage. Write a three to five page essay (double spaced, 1-inch margins) that describes the major hallmarks in hominid evolution (similar to what we have covered in lectures). Please provide a simplified evolutionary lineage of five hominids (including Anatomically Modern Humans) as discussed in class. For each hominid or hominid group, provide an archaeological site where their remains have been found and name their associated tool technologies. And, provide several characteristics that make these hominids or hominid groups distinctive. I suggest you start with an introductory paragraph and have each new hominid group (following our simplified evolutionary lineage from class) constitute a new paragraph. Then, end with a concluding paragraph.

Module 03 – Agencies and Who They Serve

For this discussion, review the various healthcare settings in your reading (such as hospital, community health center, etc.) and select one. Once selected, research the internet to identify a facility that represents your selected healthcare delivery setting. Review their website and determine:

  • Location and size
  • Mission and values
  • Accreditation and awards
  • How long they have been serving their target population
  • Whether they are part of a system or a single institution
  • Are they for profit or not-for profit
  • The target populations they serve
  • The clinical and client services they provide
  • The type of staff who work in the setting
  • Contributions to the community.
  • In a two to three paragraph discussion post, identify key aspects of the selected healthcare setting, how their mission and values compare with the services they provide and their target populations, the type of staff who work there, any special or unique aspects of the healthcare setting, and your impression of the healthcare setting after reviewing their website. You don’t need to identify the name of the healthcare setting just the type.

Accounting – Budgeting Concepts and Process

Many researchers praise the benefits of participative budgeting. Is it wise to involve multiple parties at multiple levels in the organization in the budget preparation process? In what ways can participative budgeting be used when creating a master budget for an organization?

Further, explore the different components of the master budget and assess how each is linked to form a cohesive financial plan for a company to follow. How can participative budgeting make the master budgeting process more efficient and effective? Explain.

Embed course material concepts, principles, and theories (which requires supporting citations) along with at least one scholarly, peer-reviewed reference supporting your answer. Keep in mind that these scholarly references can be found in the Saudi Electronic Library by conducting an advanced search specific to scholarly references.

Statistical Analysis:Infant Mortality

You are completing a clinical rotation in a small community agency that provides services to pregnant women or women with children under the age of 3. This agency is located in an urban area of the southern United States. The racial composition of the community is 78.1% white, 9.6% African American, 8.0% Hispanic, 0.3% American Indian/Alaska Native, 2.0% Asian, and 2.0% other. In 2009, 110,800 women of child-bearing age resided in the county with 5,300 total births.

Recently you and your fellow students learned that current statistics for the county reveal that from 2006 to 2008, the infant mortality (number of deaths per 1000 live births) rate was 8.2%; an increase from 6.5% in 2005-2007. For African Americans, the rates were 10.0% in 2005 to 2007 and increased to 14.4% in 2006 to 2008. The local Healthy Start agency confirms that these data are accurate for the community. In fact, based on a review of deaths by the coroner, in the last year, the major causes of neonatal and infant demise were low birth weight, babies sleeping in bed with an adult (roll over/unintentional deaths), and SIDS. Marketing Brand Elements

PART 1. Choose 2 brand names that you like. You don’t have to like the brand’s products, but you do have to like the brand’s name. For EACH brand name, answer the following questions:

  1. (a) If someone who NEVER heard of this brand in his/her life first heard this brand name, do you think the brand name would be attention-grabbing and memorable to this person? (b) Explain what aspects about this name would (or would not) make the name attention-grabbing and memorable for someone who just learned about it.
  2. (a) If someone who NEVER heard of this brand in his/her life first learned about this brand name, do you think this person would feel that the brand name is fun or pleasant to hear/say in a phonetic sense? (b) Explain what aspects about this name would (or would not) make the name fun or pleasant to hear/say for someone who just learned about it.
  3. (a) If someone who NEVER heard of this brand in his/her life first heard this brand name, do you think this person will be able to guess what kinds of products/services the brand offers? (b) Explain what aspects about this name would (or would not) make it easy for someone new to guess what kinds of products/services are offered by the brand.

PART 2. Some brand names tend to be more abstract and do not specifically convey the product category (e.g, McDonald’s, Amazon) while other brand names tend to be more concrete and specifically convey the product category (e.g, Burger King, Office Depot). List at least 1 pro and 1 con for the former, that is, having an abstract brand name that does NOT specifically convey the product category.

PART 3. For the class project and the restaurant idea your group came up with in class (or feel free to come up with a new restaurant idea different from what you had in your worksheet), generate 1 brand name that you believe is not only effective, but also captures the unique positioning of your brand.

  1. Explain why you think this brand name would be likable, memorable, and effective in other ways.
  2. Go to the US Patent and Trademark Office website (CLICK HERELinks to an external site. and do a “Basic Word Mark Search”) and enter your brand name as a search term. Is the brand name already taken?
  3. Answer this question only if the answer above is “yes” (the name was already taken). Come up with other brand name ideas, until you can find one that is not yet registered. (a) What brand name did you end up with, and (b) how many trials did you have to go through to find a brand name that is not already registered?

Company/Product Research

This paper must be no less than 1,000 words and should demonstrate a thorough awareness of the topic as well as the ability to engage in philosophical reasoning.

This paper requires you to do a small amount of outside research. Please be sure that you have competency with any material you include in your paper. In other words, you need to actually understand what it means, and be able to have a conversation about it. If there’s any question, I may reach out to you for a chat to help ensure that you do properly understand the material, since we won’t have covered it in class. In other words, if you don’t understand a source, don’t use it!

You must also be able to provide your instructor with copies of your sources if requested. All sources must include complete citations. Failure to cite your sources is academic misconduct and will result in a failure of the assignment (for more information, see the academic honesty section of the syllabus and the handout on academic misconduct and proper citations). If you have any doubts about whether your paper is properly cited, I am happy to look at it for you in advance of the due date.

The Assignment: For this assignment, you will choose a company or product that you patronize or purchase regularly (Note: due to oversaturation, you may NOT write on any of the following companies: Amazon, Publix, Chick-fil-a, or Nike). Do some research into this company or product, through the lens of consumer ethics. How are the workers involved treated? If it makes use of animals or animal products, how are they treated? Are there environmental impacts to be considered? If a company, does it affiliate itself with political causes that you agree or disagree with? Does the company or its CEOs contribute money to causes or organizations that you agree or disagree with? Are there other factors that make you favor or disfavor this company or product, from a consumer ethics perspective?

Part I – Explain the results of your research. Did you learn information about the company that surprised you? (In this section, you should simply describe the results of your research. It should be no more than 1/3 of your finished paper).

Part II – Given what you’ve learned, do you believe you have a moral responsibility to change your purchasing behavior with regard to this company or product? Explain why, appealing to at least one moral theory we have studied in this course. Be sure to back up your statements with moral principles and arguments. (In this section, you will be evaluated based on your ability to give a reasoned moral response to as aspect of your own behavior, given research. You must make reference to specific theorists and concepts we have studied in this course).

Part III – Construct a counterargument to your view. Using the principle of charity, explain why someone would disagree with your argument in Part II. (In this section, you will be evaluated based on your ability to understand and explain a view that opposes your own).
