Read the biography of Black Hawk, linked here. After you finish reading, think about the ways that other Indigenous people have resisted, negotiated, or benefitted from colonialism and empires: Guaman Poma, Marie Rouensa, Pocahontas, Popé, Pontiac, Tupac Amaru, Molly Brant, William Apess, and Mary Secuter, just to name a few. Does Black Hawk share some of the same perspectives or arguments as previous Indigenous people? Or is there something new about his perspective? This paper should analyze similarities and differences between Black Hawk’s autobiography and other Indigenous perspectives on colonialism/empires that we’ve covered in this class during the month of March.
