How much does context matter in interpreting an artwork’s meaning
Draped Reclining Mother and Baby , from 1983, is an abstracted image that has captured the essence of that close relationship. The sculptor Henry Moore said “the Mother and Child . . . has been a universal theme from the beginning of time” (Hedgecoe 1968:61).
