Project Responsibilities

Whiplash is the most common injury that occurs during rear-end collisions. This is when the soft tissue and sometimes bone structures in the neck area are damaged due to a rapid forward and backward movement of the head. Our group will research the forces involved in rear-end collisions and how they cause the injuries to the driver/passenger. We would like to apply this research to investigate how a child sitting in the front seat during a rear-end collision will be affected and what extent of neck injuries could be caused. We hypothesize that children will have a greater extent of neck injuries due to whiplash because their bones and tissue are more fragile than adults.
