activism project
There are a number of social justice issues related to mental health. This semester, I want you to organize and carry out an activism project that relates to one of these themes. Remember that activism can take on many forms – from writing a letter to a politician to participating in a march or protest. You can find a few examples on NAMI’s website
To get you to start thinking about this project, here are some topics to consider:
- Funding for treatment
- Equity in access to treatment
- Affordability of treatment
- The role of racism, sexism, or other means of bias in diagnosis and treatment
- The opioid crisis
- Prevention measures/funding
You will create a PowerPoint that details your activism project. Your PowerPoint should include the following information:
- Identified problem or issue
- Research on/history of the problem
- The activist activity you did
- Evaluation of how effective the activism was
- Discussion of further work that needs to be done on this issue
- How you see activism in this area benefiting your current or future clients and/or work
- Personal reflection on this project
- How did you feel about activism before this project? While engaging in activism? Afterwards?
- What did you learn about the issue/problem? Activism? Yourself?
