There are a number of social justice issues related to mental health. This semester, I want you to organize and carry out an activism project that relates to one of these themes. Remember that activism can take on many forms – from writing a letter to a politician to participating in a march or protest. You can find a few examples on NAMI’s website

To get you to start thinking about this project, here are some topics to consider:

• Funding for treatment
• Equity in access to treatment
• Affordability of treatment
• The role of racism, sexism, or other means of bias in diagnosis and treatment
• The opioid crisis
• Prevention measures/funding

You will create a PowerPoint that details your activism project. Your PowerPoint should include the following information:

• Identified problem or issue
• Research on/history of the problem
• The activist activity you did
• Evaluation of how effective the activism was
• Discussion of further work that needs to be done on this issue
• How you see activism in this area benefiting your current or future clients and/or work
• Personal reflection on this project
  • How did you feel about activism before this project? While engaging in activism? Afterwards?
  • What did you learn about the issue/problem? Activism? Yourself?
