Guidelines

The goal of the paper assignment is to assess your ability to read, synthesize, and interpret original scientific articles related to the environmental impacts of energy acquisition and consumption. An original scientific article is a peer-reviewed report of research activity written by the scientists that performed the research. In other words, original scientific articles are primary sources of information, containing original data, analytical results, and interpretations. Successfully synthesizing and interpreting an original scientific article on energy and environmental issues will demonstrate an increase in your scientific literacy on these topics.

Each scientific article is accompanied by a summary article published as either a press release or a popular media article. These summary articles will help you understand the original scientific work and choose the article that is the most interesting to you. Your paper should cover the following components:

1. Clearly describe the hypothesis or question addressed in the scientific article in your own words.

2. Summarize the methods, results, and interpretation of those results of the authors of the scientific article.

3. State the significance of the discovery or scientific study – More than what and when, why is the result of the scientific study important in understanding the environmental impacts of energy acquisition and consumption?

Two-Transmission-Link Queueing System Simulator and Output Instructions

In this mini-project, you will develop a discrete-event driven simulator for a two-queue transmission system described below, and analyze the simulation results for a number of different settings. To make your task easier, you will be provided with a simulation program written by a former  student with his permission. You may refer to this program to understand the overall structure of your program. However, please do not directly copy portions of the program, but instead use it as a guide.

System Description:

• Packets arrive (avg. interrarrival time: 1/lambda) to a router with two outgoing transmission links.

• Packets arrive to the router according to a Poisson Process. Each arriving packet is instantaneously placed on one of the two outgoing transmission link queues.

• Service times are distributed exponentially at each transmission link with different average service rates mu1 and mu2.

• An arriving packet joins link i with a fixed probability f_iindependently of the other packets and the system state.

Numerical Results and Analysis:

You will use the two-queue system simulator that you develop to generate a set of results according to the following instructions.

For each simulation setting below, generate at least 6000 arrivals according to a Poisson Process with rate Lambda. Ignore at least the first 1000 packets to leave the system in your performance metric calculations. If you use simulation time as your stopping criterion, adjust your simulation time accordingly. You may need to increase these values further in order to obtain steady-state behavior. For each set of parameters, show the following metrics in a table:

• the blocking probability (Pb) (at each queue, and in the system)

• the average delay at each queue (and in the system)

• the average throughput at each queue and in the system

Sandra, a 47-year-old divorced woman, received a diagnosis of stage 3 ovarian cancer 4 years ago, for which she had a total hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo- oophorectomy, omentectomy, lymphadenectomy, and tumor debulking followed by chemotherapy, consisting of cisplatin (Platinol), paclitaxel (Taxol), and doxorubicin (Adriamycin). She did well for 2 years and then moved back to her hometown near her family and underwent three more rounds of secondline chemotherapy. She accepted a less stressful job, bought a house, renewed old friendships, and became more involved with her two sisters and their families. Sandra developed several complications, including metastasis to the lungs. Then she could no longer work, drive, or care for herself. She had been told by her oncologist that there was nothing else that could be done and that she should consider entering a hospice. She met her attorney and prepared an advance directive and completed her will. She decided to have hospice care at home and, with the help of her family, set up her first floor as a living and sleeping area. She was cared for by family members around the clock for approximately 3 days. Sandra observed that she was tiring everyone out so much that they could not really enjoy each other’s company. At this time, she contacted the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) to seek assistance. Her plan was to try to enjoy her family and friend’s visits. After assessment, the VNA nurse prioritized her problems to include fatigue and caregiver role strain. Other potential problem areas that may need to be incorporated into the care plan include anticipatory grieving and impaired comfort.
