Suppose you have been asked to deliver a guest lecture for your local high school on the issue of sports concussions and traumatic brain encephalopathy science. Share the lessons/ideas that Barr (2020) delivers in his paper to your audience – these are high school students as well as teachers, parents, grandparents, siblings…everyone.

Your job: Prepare a PowerPoint presentation grounded in this article. Your Powerpoint presentation should be 15-25 slides. Each slide should contain the “key points” as well as completed “notes pages”; these notes pages are what you would say. You can find the notes pages in the “view” section of the Powerpoint slide, or at the bottom of the screen if you click on “notes”. How much writing should be in the notes page? Well, it’s up to you but a paragraph at least and maybe 3 paragraphs at most?

Your presentation should:

  • Discuss the issues involved in contact team sports related to traumatic head injuries. What are the benefits of participating in team sports?

  • Explain the controversy regarding the risk of concussions and CTE?

  • Explain what the conspiracy theories are about and discuss some of the repercussions.

  • Elaborate on psychology’s involvement in understanding sport-related concussions.

  • Discuss the role of professional sports and the emergence of CTE.

  • Discuss the tobacco & lung cancer analogy.

  • Explain how the believer versus denier mentality developed.

  • What perspectives does psychology have to offer? What do inferential heuristics and biases have to do with this problem?

  • Discuss what psychology has to offer in terms of a response or a path toward changing public opinion.

  • Share your opinion on this issue with the audience.

11) In your view, what are the key “take away” points from this article that you’d want your audience to know?
