Report #7 Sociology

here are two parts to this reflection paper. First, chapter 14 is an overview of what we covered on the theories and terms, historical background on our groups, and their SES today. This first part will be your thoughts about what you think would happened to a “new group” entering American society today? As a “minority” what can they expect? What would you tell this new group? The second part of this assignment is to review the course and give your thoughts on how to improve the course.

Marketing an Innovative Product

For this assignment, you will select an innovative product in the marketplace today that positively impacts the environment. Choose a product (or service) that interests you – this will make the paper much more enjoyable to research and write.

Do NOT choose a common consumer product such as Nike shoes, etc. Find something unique at which you can work on skills in marketing and business.

The paper must include the following sections and each section must be identified in your paper as a Heading (so that information can be organized and easily identified).

  1. Introduction: What product did you select, and why? What is the need? How does this product fill a market need? What is innovative about it? How is the company marketing the product? How does this product positively affect environmental concerns? How does it add value?
  2. Target market: Describe the target market that requires this product. Be very detailed.
  • What are the demographics, psychographics, attitudes, and so on?
  • How big is the market? Is it growing or shrinking?
  • How else can you describe the target market?
  • Who will most likely buy your product?

  1. Product description: Describe the product. (You may use photos or diagrams, but be sure to cite the source.)
  • Also include information about the company that is producing the product. How big is the company? How experienced is it?
  • How else can you describe the product and the company?
  1. Pricing: Include the total cost for the product.
  • Is there a range of prices for various versions? Are there discounts?
  • What else does the buyer need to pay for (additional fees, shipping, warranty, installation, etc.)?
  1. Place/Distribution: Explain how the product is sold and distributed.
  • Where can you buy it? Is it regional, national, or global?
  • How many places can the product be purchased?
  • If global, how is the product distributed?
  1. Promotion: Describe the promotional tactics that are used for the product.
  • Are there ads on TV, radio, banner ads, websites, endorsements, etc.?
  • The paper must include at least two examples of an existing ad or promotional element.
  1. Summary: What is your final opinion of this product and its marketing?
  • Do you think it will be successful, and why?
  1. Reference page: Provide a properly formatted page to receive full credit for this section (APA citation and format style).
  • Remember also that in-text citations must be included behind ALL facts learned from a reference source.

You need at least five reference sources for this product assignment. One source may be the company website; other options are business magazine articles, newspaper articles, and the like. Find out as much as you can about the product category, the competitors, and the customers.

You may NOT use Wikis or blogs as a reference source in this paper.

This paper should be 5-6 typed pages in length, plus a reference page and cover page for the document. Remember to include in-text citations for all facts. Follow the APA citation and format style.

This paper should be written in the third person and use an objective voice tone (avoid “I, we”). It is an analytical paper; it should not include opinion or beliefs.

Environmental and pollution

As Exxon and BP have discovered, a company may be held liable for endangering or polluting the environment. Recently, several attorney generals have commences a law suit against the nation’s five largest emitters of carbon dioxide (CO2) pollution to force reductions in their emissions of the heat-trapping gas. The U.S. Supreme Court has granted certiorari indicating that it would hear American Electric Power v. Connecticut, an appeal of the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeal’s ruling that states and environmental groups could sue under federal public nuisance law to force electric utilities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. . This is the summarized court’s ruling.

Similar environmental cases have been presented to the court.

After you read the articles , think about if you agree or disagree with the decision of the court of the holding and why. Do you think companies should be held liable? Why or why not?

  • Is pollution or environmental change something that can be effectively regulated by each state?
  • What standard would develop for when the federal government should step in to regulate indirect pollution by a company such as described in the American Electric Power case above?
  • In Germany, manufactures must take back packing materials for their products such as crated, drums, boxes and shrink wrap. They may not dispose of these items in the public waste disposal system. What would you think if legislators required American retailors to take back packaging materials such as cartons and antitheft devices on CDs?

Social Norm Experiment

Pay attention to your feelings and reactions just prior to breaking the norm, how you feel while you are breaking the norm, and also after you are done. Pay attention to the reactions of other people around you as you are breaking the norm. Some students have found this easier to do if they have a friend with them who knows what is going on as they break the norm. Do not tell others you are doing this for school – try to be as normal as possible. Video the social norm (or have a friend/family member video) and attach it in Blackboard; then in a one page paper answer the following questions:

1. What social norm did you decide to violate? Why did you pick this norm?

2. Describe how you felt just before you broke the social norm, during and after violating the norm.

3. Did you bring a friend with you? If so, how did affect your reactions to breaking the social norm?

4. What were the reactions of people around you?

5. What did you learn from this project about social norms?
