Question 1: Citation practice. [5 points]

Imagine that I want to quote the historian Douglas Strausand and his book about the three Islamic ‘gunpowder’ empires. The quote comes from page 11: Link to book.

This is the sentence in my essay with the quotation:

According to Douglas Strausand, “The three empires shared a common heritage and a common dilemma.”1

The quotation marks “ “ show which words I am quoting.  In an essay, the little number 1 would lead to a footnote at the end of the document that gives the original source.

Write the end-of-page citation that would accompany this footnote in the box below:

Answer:

1.

How to write your citation:

Write the author’s name.

Then a comma.

Then a space.

Then, write the title of the book in italics. Capitalise all important words.

After the book title, enter a space (no comma). Then, open brackets: [ ( ]

After the bracket type the city of publication.

Then, a colon [ : ]

Then a space [ ].

Then type the publishing company, followed by a comma.

After the comma, add a space [ ]. Then, write the publication year. Then, close brackets [ ) ].

After the brackets, put a comma. Then, add a space. Then, write the page number.

Finally, add a full stop [ . ].

Example:

1.       Frederick Cooper, Africa since 1940 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2002), 20-23.

Question 2: Primary source analysis (image). [10 points]

Choose ONE of the following images: 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d (see below).

Answer two questions:

Hints: Who is working in this picture and where are they working? What powered pre-industrial manufacturing, and how did that change in this period? What does this picture tell us about gender and pre-industrial labour?

[2c] Independence in the Americas

Proclamation and oath of independence of Chile. Painting by Pedro Subercaseaux from 1945 of events in 1818. Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilean_Declaration_of_Independence#/media/File:JuraIndependencia.jpg.

Hints: What sort of people appear in the picture (multiple answers)? What does this tell us about the different sources of legitimacy that were claimed by the new country?  What about the gender of the people in the picture?

[2d] United States ‘Manifest Destiny’

John Gast, American Progress. Painting, 1872. Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manifest_destiny#/media/File:American_Progress_(John_Gast_painting).jpg

Hints: What events does this painting try to summarise? What do each of the scenes in the image tell us? What did the USA believe about itself at this time, according to this painting? Would we have the same beliefs and values today?

[2e] China’s ‘Century of Humiliation’

The Situation in the Far East by Tse Tsan-tai (1899). This is a political cartoon by an anti-Qing activist.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_situation_in_the_Far_East_by_Tse_Tsan-tai.jpg

Hints: What is the significance of the animals in this picture? What does this say about foreign powers in China? Is there a difference between how China and Japan are presented? What does this say about China’s people and its rulers?

Question 3: Short essay [15 points]
Answer ONE of these essay questions:

1.      How did Portuguese ‘discoveries’ of regions east of Africa shape world history?

2.      How have links between the Arab World and Africa been important for the history of these two regions? Examine any period after 1500.

3.      Compare and contrast TWO revolutions in history since 1500. Describe similarities and/or differences.

4.      Examine the impacts of industrialisation on society in ONE region of the world since 1750.

5.      Why did nationalism become important in some regions of the world during the nineteenth century?

6.      Examine the links between economics and politics in ONE region of the world. You can focus on any period between 1500 and 1939.

7.      Discuss the links between trade and imperialism in ONE region of the world. You can focus on any period between 1500 and 1939.

8.      Why were societies after 1918 unable to avoid a Second World War in 1939? Discuss at least two countries.

9.      How do you account for the dramatic rise of communism in the twentieth century? Discuss at least two countries.

Your essay should do the following:

·         In your introduction, you should answer the essay question. This is the thesis statement.

·         At least three body paragraphs. Body paragraphs can be short, but you should include at least THREE historical examples/evidence for your argument in the essay.

·         You need to explain each example to (1) show that you understand the example and your historical period, and (2) to explain why you think it is important for the essay question.

·         A short conclusion (1-2 sentences).

Minimum 300 words. The most important thing is not the word count, but to follow the instructions.

Hints:

·         The questions are very general. You can make your answer more specific. Instead of discussing a region, you can discuss a country. You can also limit your answer to a specific time period.

·         Be specific, not vague. Give as much evidence as you can to support your arguments.

·         It is not enough to rely on the lectures and the slide shows. You should choose your topic, and do more research by yourself.

·         Start this assignment EARLY.

AME404 Homework #4

STAND-ALONE PROJECT

MJ651 Ethics and Justice

Stand-Alone Project: Ethical Perspectives on Contemporary Legal Issues (200 points)

You should begin working on the Stand-Alone Project early in the course. Each lesson provides a benchmark for completing the Stand-Alone Project in a timely manner while working through the course. You will find this information in the “Stand-Alone Project Benchmark” section of each lesson. (200 points) (A 10-page response is required for the combination of Parts A, B, and C.)

For this project, you will analyze a contemporary legal issue from an ethical perspective, using both case law and contemporary examples in your analysis. Your Stand-Alone Project responses should be both grammatically and mechanically correct, and formatted in the same fashion as the project itself. If there is a Part A, your response should identify a Part A, etc. In addition, you must appropriately cite all resources used in your response and document in a bibliography using APA style.(200 points)(A 10-page response is required.)

Select a contemporary legal issue discussed during this course. Some of the discussed topics include police discretion, theories of punishment, disparate sentencing, and privatization of prisons. To make this project as interesting as possible, select a topic that interests you. Perform the necessary research to address the following in your paper.

  • What is the history and evolution of this topic? When did we first see this issue arise? How many perceptions and opinions about this topic changed over time? How have the courts and legislators treated this topic over time? Has there been any significant change? (A 3-page response is required.)
  • In analyzing the topic, find at least three (3) different court cases, either from the U.S. Supreme Court, or your state Supreme Court, that have dealt with this issue. Cite the case and give a brief summary of the case’s facts. Then, identify which ethical systems the court is using to reach its conclusions. (Note: The ethical systems are not always obvious. Analyze the case and determine for yourself what systems the court is using.) Remember, the court may be using more than one system to reach its conclusion. Explain how the ethical system is used in this case and how this case relates to the overall history and evolution of the topic.(A 3-page response is required.)
  • Discuss at least three (3) contemporary examples in the news or other articles on your chosen topic (contemporary can refer to anything in the last 5 years). Using the ethical systems studied during the course, justify or criticize the actions in your examples.(A 2-page response is required.)
  • Propose at least two (2) suggestions for resolving any ethical problems or issues related to your topic. Ask yourself this question, “What future actions should lawmakers, law enforcement officials, and others involved in this topic take to ensure continuing ethical and moral behavior?” (A 2-page response is required.)

Here are some suggestions to assist you in researching and developing your paper.

Using State Law

You should use the law of your home state if at all possible. For one, it is the law with which you are probably most familiar, and through your work on this project, you will learn even more about your state’s laws, regulations and cases. You might as well choose your own state!

Federal versus District Courts

Now a word about case law: Every state is in a corresponding federal district, and the decisions of those district courts are appealed to the corresponding federal appellate circuit court. Therefore, in Georgia, for example, the state courts with reported opinions are the Georgia Court of Appeals and the Georgia Supreme Court. Georgia also has a federal District Court and its decisions are appealed to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. The 11th Circuit cases can then be appealed to the United States Supreme Court. Therefore, any cases from those courts would be fair game for anyone choosing Georgia for this assignment. To browse through the various state governments, websites, etc., I recommend that you visit “State and Local Government on the Net” (http://www.statelocalgov.net/index.cfm) where you will find links to the official state homepage for every state in the country.

Give Credit to Your Sources

When using information obtained from any source like those mentioned above, a case, a statute, etc., you must properly cite them within your paper as well as listing the source in a bibliography. Use APA style and be consistent throughout the entire assignment.

Flow and Support

Organize your paper in a logical fashion. Introduce your topic, provide the required information, and then conclude your paper. Make your paper flow like a road map so that the reader knows where he or she is supposed to be going and can easily follow your directions. Provide many examples and support for your positions for these trends based on your collected data. The page lengths listed are basic guidelines for developing each section of your paper. If you must deviate from these lengths due to the nature of your chosen topic, by all means, do so. However, you must still meet the overall page requirement to receive full credit

Numerical Analysis

Problem. Frequency power spectrum
Consider the following nonlinear 3rd-order system:



dx1
dt
= −(x2 + x3),
dx2
dt
= x1 +
1
5
x2,
dx3
dt
=
1
5
+ (x1 − ϵ)x3.
This equation is called the R¨ossler’s equation, and it has been applied to study chemical reactions
and electrical circuits. Integrate this equation numerically using the initial conditions x1(0) = 2.0,
x2(0) = 2.0, x3(0) = 0 for 4 different choices of parameter ϵ: ϵ = 2.5, 3.0, 4.1, 5.0. Provide the following
outputs for each values of ϵ.
1. Present a phase portrait of x1, x2 and x3 in a three dimensional phase space (i.e., take x1, x2
x3 as x−, y−, z−axis, respectively) by using plot3 function (see Matlab help for detail). Note
that the time series of a solution may contain some initial transient. Therefore when plotting the
trajectories in the phase space, omit (do not show) the initial transient trajectory. Assume the
initial transient time as roughly 15 basic periods of the solution x1(t) (basic period is the period
of the most dominant oscillation, i.e., the Fourier mode that has the largest energy).
Comments: To find the period of the dominant Fourier mode in the time series of x1, you compute
a frequency spectrum of the x1(t) first, and then from the frequency spectrum find the frequency at
which largest spectral energy is attained. From that frequency you can compute the basic period,
and by using the period you can remove the transient part in the phase portrait. The following
script is one of the examples for identifying the time array index it at which the transient part
ends.
% Estimate transient limit
[maxpower, ip]=max(power);
T1=2*pi/omega(ip);
[tmp, it]=min(abs(t-15*T1));
Here the power is a spectral energy density array and omega is a discrete frequency which must
be provided from the time series of x1 beforehand. Then, first, we find the maximum spectral
energy and find the index ip at which the energy is maximum. Then find the basic period T1
from the discrete frequency at the maximum energy, i.e., omega(ip). Then we find the time index
that is nearest to 15 times the dominant period. It can be found by searching a minimum value
of abs(t-15*T1), and in this search the corresponding index (it) of array t is also obtained. By
using the index it, you can plot a phase portrait after the transient part.
2. Present a frequency spectrum of the signal x1(t), and find the most dominant frequency and its
corresponding period.
Comments: To obtain a reasonable frequency spectrum, you must obtain a sufficiently long
time signal. You must explore and choose sampling interval until the resulting spectrum is not
significantly affected by the aliasing error.

music question

Write a 3-4 page (1,000 words) paper that incorporates two contrasting live performances following the guidelines found in the Live Performance papers.  The two examples chosen must be accessible but could also challenge the students’ regular listening habits by writing about performances in venues outside of the students’ cultural milieu.  Successful essays should follow any compelling arguments that use descriptive, comparative, or argumentative points of view.  The length of the overall paper will be greatly enhanced through the choice of the thesis presented in the outline that includes the following points:

1) use of any theoretical frameworks discussed in the text or lectures that define the importance of the chosen genre in the culture of the people performing and listening to the music.  (Students should use the Rubric A as a guideline to gather evidence and include the answer to questions shown there);

2) properly identified components in an aural analysis of the first and second examples;

3) at least one properly situated characteristic of African/African derived musics as described by Torino or another other scholar whose theory applies to your research; and

4) critical statements about the quality of the “scene” of the performance, that includes where, who performed and the audience.

RUBRIC (A)

Live Performance Rubric

Questions for Preparation

At your live performance formal or informal, choose one composition then write a 1-2 page paper by answering the following questions:

Describe the genre:  (30%)

  • What is the name and composer of the composition you choose to write about? Give the full name of the composition/piece. Do not choose the entire concert but focus on one work.

  • Explain who, when and where you heard the performances. Must be dated within the time span of June 7 through July 11, 2021.  Record the performance and upload your video to ePortfolio (digication.com; direction will be posted)

3)    Define the name of the genre?  Most musics discussed in the course can be found in RESEARCH tab on Blackboard divided by geographic location.  You may also find scholarly definitions in the Garland Encylopedia of World Music (link to Library resource found in RESEARCH).  For example, the composition you choose to hear could be one of the following:  a spiritual; the blues; jazz;  R&B; rap (or hip hop); gospel; an oratorio; a symphony; an opera; Calypso; Soca; Compas; etc.

Then define your components (aural analysis):  (50%)

3) What is the rhythm in your specific composition?

4) Describe something about the pitch.

5) Describe something about the melody.

6) Describe something about the harmony.

7) Describe the timbre.

Finally, aesthetically, what do you think? (20%)

8)  What are your aesthetic preferences for choosing to write about your example?  Now you can make statements subjective viewpoints, i.e., something that makes you like the music you have chosen to write about, i.e., the harmony or the melody? Explain why you like it using terminology from the text.

AURAL ANALYSIS RUBRIC FORMATTING

Use the following template to organize your analysis:
The composition “(Name of the composition will be given IN QUOTES)” by the (who ever wrote the composition) is from the genre of ______________.  (research the definition of the genre you are writing about)

[Place the research you use to support your narrative here.  It must be offset with a scholar definition that did not come from Wikipedia.  You can use research from the text but you a footnote in the paper and in the Works Cited page.  Use the CTRL+ALT+F shortcut for the quick Word footnote feature][1]

The rhythmic pattern is _____ beats (must be a number).  There is a high pitch in the _________ and low pitch heard in the ________.  (maybe more than one answer and described using Sachs-Hornbostel’s categories).  The melody is in the __________ [use the Sachs-Hornbostel classification] and the harmony can be heard in the ________________ [use the Sachs-Hornbostel classification].  (harmony must be more than one medium [unless it is chordal, i.e., guitar or piano] and described by discussing Sachs-Hornbostel’s category)  The timbre (choose the phonic structure) heard is __________.  The most prominent characteristic is ______________ because I hear (explain the medium(s) you hear this characteristic after the chapter on Sub-Sahara Africa).  Aesthetically, I __________ this composition because of its __________.  [the last sentence should be only use of a subjective statement]

There are five terms (rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony and timbre) that must be properly situated from live performances selected by the student.  Each correct statement receives 20 points.  You will practice this in the three quizzes given before the midterm essay is due.  This rubric can be expanded to include conceptual ideas that are objectively based.

Students must use this format each time they are asked for the aural analysis of a composition.  If you have questions, please send me an email or come and show up during announced virtual lecture hours.

[1] Notice the formatting given here.  Using the shortcut feature will reduce the need for you to alter the document with superscripts.  Be sure to maintain the use of Times New Roman font and 12pt. pitch.

cookie Business

In this project, you will be opening your own specialty cookie company to see how product costing methods and changes in production affect business decisions. You will be creating a series of reports and analyzing the results using the template provided to guide you through the project.

The learning objectives of this project are as follows:

  1. Gain an understanding of product costing (direct materials, direct labor, and overhead).
  2. Review job order costing.
  3. Review process costing.
  4. Make business decisions based on analyzing accounting data.

You will prepare a four- to five-page written report (including spreadsheets) with at least two scholarly sources using the Unit II Project Template . Your report will provide the following information:

Introduction

Part 1: Establish a cookie business selling only one type of specialty cookie with two employees making the cookies.

  • Create a name and establish a location for the business.
  • Construct a mission statement for the business.
  • Decide on the type of cookie you want to make and sell.

Part 2: Develop costing and sales information for 1,000 cookies.

  • Estimate and explain the cost per cookie based on job order costing (manufacturing overhead is 30% of direct labor costs). Prepare a job order cost sheet by researching and identifying the top five ingredients and their estimated costs as your direct materials. Research and identify the cost of wages for your two employees as your direct labor. It typically takes two days to make 1,000 cookies.
  • Estimate and explain the cost per cookie based on process costing with 40% conversion costs. Identify the top three processes you feel are needed to make the cookies and prepare a production cost sheet for one of those processes.
  • Estimate and explain the sales price you plan to set per cookie based on the cost data.

Part 3: Compare and contrast the costing methods used in this project, including which you believe provides the most useful information as a manager.

Part 4: Discuss what will happen to revenue if the number of the cookies sold increases or decreases.

Conclusion and Recommendations

Use the Unit II Cookie Project Spreadsheet Templates for your job order, and process costing spreadsheets to be embedded in your case study document.

powerpoint about a genetic disorder

Introduction

Genetic disorders are the result of genetic abnormalities such as gene mutation or changes in structure or number of chromosomes. The effects of abnormalities in an individual’s DNA were once entirely unpredictable. Some genetic disorders are caused by genes on the X -chromosome, others are caused by autosomal genes. The person who inherits a genetic disorder will suffer a lot in his/her life; Karyotype helps researchers to detect the genetic disorders. Research in this field is going on in many labs all over the world to solve these problems. In this project you will search the net to get more information about the genetic disorder that you selected. These are some examples of genetic disorders that you can select from.

GENETIC DISORDERS:

  • Hemophilia                         2- Type-1 diabetes                 3- Down syndrome
